Mid Coast Surf Reserve | South Australia

In March 2015, South Australia's mid coast was crowned as the 3rd Surf Reserve in South Australia.

The 9km length of coast between Christies Beach and Moana (where Surf & Sun run their surf classes) was titled as a surf reserve after many years of campaigning by a passionate group of mid coast surfers who want to ensure that the coastline remains as pristine as possible and so they can enjoy the views of the cliffs and beaches for many years to come.

Having these elements present on the day of the surfing competitions will heighten up the atmosphere of the event. Getting great waves during an official surfing competition is a crucial part of the event. It can always make or break a surfer’s goal to take home the trophy.

The unique location of the Mid Coast Surfing reserve makes it an ideal spot for surfing. It actually is considered as one of the top surfing havens for surfers who often visit Australia. If you want to personally practice your surfing on the great waves and scenery that this beach has to offer, all you need to do is visit Moana Beach. You’ll surely love the experience.

For the bid to be successful, it must have community support, the coast had to have good waves, and the area should have an extensive surfing history.

Dion Atkinson, one of SA's best surfer in the recently concluded South Australian Surf State Titles 2015 and who was on the world tour in 2014 became the mid coast ambassador. Dion grew up surfing at Seaford and training at "The Bowl" had helped him to achieve where he is today.

In the coming days, we will see interpretive signage installed and a dedication ceremony to celebrate the mid coast being titled as a surfing reserve.

If you haven't visited the mid coast then you must drive down, check out the coastline including the Port Noarlunga Reef and Onkaparinga River Mouth and stop in for a coffee and lunch at Deep Blue in Moana beach.
