How To Wax Your Surfboard

One of the most important things that you should consider when you are a surfer or you want to start surfing is waxing your surfboard. Surfboard wax is used to help give your feet a good grip on your surfboard when gliding the waves. Before waxing your surfboard, here are the things that you will need:

• Basecoat Wax
• Topcoat Wax
• Wax Comb

The first step will be cleaning your surfboard. Clean the deck first to make sure that when you apply the surf wax it will stick to your board. Use a damp cloth and dry it properly.

Apply the base coat; this will be the foundation of waxing your surfboard. In applying the basecoat, make sure you create some bumps to create a pattern that will last long enough until your next application. It may be a bit hard to apply the basecoat since you have to push it down to make sure it sticks. If you press it too lightly, it will not stick to the surf board and it will all be useless. If you hear a strange sound while doing this, then you are applying it right and it means that you are creating bumps on your surf board.

There are some few ways to apply your basecoat and here are some:

• Criss-crossing by going diagonal first then going perpendicular on the second.
• Front to back by rubbing the base coat in a straight line, creating parallels to the rocker.
• Circles by rubbing the basecoat in circular ways, moving upwards and downwards.
• Freestyle by going in any direction you like, straight or circular as long as you create bumps.

Note that you have to cover your whole surfing board and do not miss any spot because when you apply the top coat wax on a surface that you have not applied the basecoat wax yet, it will just come off.

Lastly, you will be applying the top coat. If you dread applying the base coat, then the top coat will be easier since it is softer to apply compared to the basecoat. Topcoat wax is affected by the water temperature. You have to consider the temperature of the place you are going to surf in when selecting your top coat. If you are in a tropical temperature it will be best if you use a top coat good for higher temperatures and if you are in a colder area, use a top coat best for lower temperatures.

What is the wax comb for? The wax comb is used after you surf. You have to comb the wax on your surfboard from time to time so it can give you a better grip letting you enjoy your surfing experience. You have to apply basecoat on your surfing boards, at least every three months or if you are too lazy, once per year.
