Top 10 Things To Do In Middleton

Centrally located on the South Coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Middleton is the ‘middle town’ nestled between Victor Harbor and Goolwa.

Read this list so you’ll never be stuck for ideas about the things to do when you visit this popular area:

1. Surfing

When the swell is pumping, Middleton is the place to be for surfers searching for the perfect wave.  Surf & Sun provides award-winning surf lessons at Middleton for newbies so you’ll be up and riding in no time.

2. Alexandrina Cheese Company

Located within half an hour from Middleton, it’s worth the detour for the mouth-watering cheesecake, freshly brewed coffee and boutique cheeses such as Encounter Bay Edam or Fleurieu Feta.

3. Hindmarsh Falls

Just 15 minutes from Middleton, this cascading waterfall is best viewed in winter or after heavy rain. Wander through bushland bird-spotting for honey eaters, wedge-tailed eagles and thrushes, then stop for a picnic.

4. Whale watching

Middleton has a prime whale watching vantage point – Bashams Beach.  Grab some binoculars and stop by for a glimpse of migrating Southern Right whales during South Australia’s cooler months (June-September).

5. Newland Head Conservation Park

Head west from Middleton to this protected area with a campground, two rugged sandy beaches popular for fishing and surfing and multiple walking trails including the Heysen Trail that crosses through the park.

6. Art and craft galleries

Creativity abounds in this region with a range of galleries showcasing jewellery, ironworks, design, paintings, sculptures and woodwork.

Drop into the Blue Temper Ironworks or the Gunther George Paukner Gallery in Middleton, the Artworx Gallery or Goolwa Community Arts and Craft Shop in Goolwa, or the Ocean Street Art Gallery or Kiri Kiri Aboriginal Art Gallery both in Victor Harbor.

7. Encounter Bikeway

Middleton is the perfect destination to start an adventure on the Encounter Bikeway – you can head towards the river port of Goolwa or cycle to Victor Harbor.

The pathway can be used by walkers, cyclists, skateboarders, roller bladers and it’s baby stroller and wheelchair-accessible.  Bike rental is possible through local company, Fleurieu Adventures.

8. Goolwa Animal Farm

Treat the kids to a fun experience at this family-run farm in nearby Goolwa.  There are plenty of things to do with kids in Goolwa including farm animals, wallabies, emus, a playground, and tractor or pony rides.

9. Hindmarsh River Walks

The Hindmarsh River Estuary is a place of great natural beauty and ecological significance.

A home to rare swamp paperbark trees, red river gums and birdlife such as hooded plovers, black chinned honey eaters and more.

The Visitor Information Centre in Victor Harbor has maps with 5 different estuary walks of varying duration from 20 minutes to 3 hours.

10. The Steam Exchange Brewery

Located in the nearby Goolwa Wharf Precinct, this local brewery produces preservative-free beers that will quench your thirst after a day of sightseeing around the region.

Sample their flagship ‘Steam Ale’ sitting on the deck in the Aussie sunshine. And on blustery days, their British-style dark ale ‘Southerly Buster Dark Ale’ is sure to warm you up.
