Top tips for surfing at Middleton
21 August, 2015
Middleton is one of the most consistent spots when taking introductory surf lessons South Australia. Middleton beach, some 85km from Adelaide, is one of the broadest and low gradient sandbars in Australia, where rides of over a minute long are possible even when surfing straight to the beach in the whitewater! The surf area during hot summer days gets busy with surfers of all levels enjoying the waves but there is still plenty of space to practice in this long beach.
Wave Type
The type of wave at Middleton is a spilling wave and the breadth of the sandbar makes it a perfect place for practicing and catching whitewater waves. There is plenty of time to stand up and ride waves then roll in slowly and gently to shore.
As you get better, there are still great waves to be had, but as you want to catch green waves here you will need to possess strong paddling and wave negotiation skills to be able to get out the back of the surf.
There are a few rips on the beach, however most common is the side shore drift and surfers need to be aware of where they entered the water and monitor their position while out in the water. Choosing the beginner surfboard is a need before you surf. More newbie surfers take this for granted.
During strong south winds and big swells, the Mid Coast Beaches between here and Adelaide, will offer smoother, easier surfing conditions for kids and beginners.
Though there are many fun things to do in Middleton, you can still have fun in this spectacular place. All you need to do is to enjoy every moment and become an explorer.
